Final

Final is Monday, Dec. 7 at 1pm. You'll present your final project (either paper or text-intensive production and tech abstract/paper).

Remember there is a 4th response to readings (Linear/Verbal Frameworks), in addition to your final project. And, make sure your other 3 responses are completed and received by me in either hard copy or posted online. And turn in your PureData project, your Processing project, and your Mind Map by that time, too (links to .zips on your hosted site or sharing of a Google drive folder are acceptable; or share with me via thumbdrive or disc).

Reading

While there will be no class on Monday, November 30, I will be available in my office during class time, if you need help on any of your projects.

Week 15

Experience Art Basel Miami Beach if you haven't already. Dec. 3 - 6. $30 per person (student rate), parking $1/hr for public lots (if you can score it, before 5pm, and a little more of a hoof), but the international art scene will never be cheaper & easier for you!

Also, here is the clickable mind-map template, also in Flash. Click on a word, zoom into that part of the map, pull up a text block (which could include images).

Week 10 & 11

MTEn Logo Materials

Video Jam Application Tutorial

Week 8 & 9

Ok, we need a little more time to do this - - let's push our deadline ahead the end of this week (Mon. Oct. 19) for your Processing sketch, and web posting for the response to the performative/interventional material. So, a little more time!

Also, which film would you prefer to dissect, Mulholland Drive, or Fellini Satyricon? They both have much to offer, in our ongoing discussions of structure (and particularly, narrative structures for both).

Week 7

Rutt-Etra Video Synthesizer patch for Quartz Composer. My experiments with the Trialog project.

A 7-step introduction to Processing, up to and including a videojam application.

To get Quartz Composer, download Xcode, and then download Graphic Tools for Xcode

Week 6

For next time, investigate what you have available for your particular OS : Quartz or Processing. If the latter, work through the Processing tutorials  If the former, try to download a working version of Quartz and peruse the tutorials in Course Resources.

Week 5 -

Extended discussion of readings, demo of random notation software. Creating your PD instruments.

Week 4 -

Labor Day, no classes held

Week 3 -

Today, Cage.

For Mac users on Yosemite and Mavericks:install X11.

Also, control options for PureData. You can use MIDI gear or the Kinect or some other arrangement if you like, but for $4.99 you can buy TouchOSC for iOS or Android, and turn your phone/tablet into a controller. A bunch of YouTube tutorials here. When we start working on Quartz Composer, you should be able to use the same software to control that!

Week 2 -

Melancholalaland site.

  • Designing Sound [hardcover], Andy Farnell ($48.18). Great immersion into PureData and sound design! But, again, several online courses exist.

Week 1 -

After going over the syllabus and an overview of the course, we started working with Pure Data. For next time, build the AM, FM, and RingModulation Synthesizers here (#s 9, 11B, and 12) and if you have time, the sequencer (#14).

Also, next time, I'd like to discuss the Four American Composers films by Greenaway, and the reading Silence by John Cage. I'm not having any luck locating an online copy of the Boulez text, so let's investigate Iannis Xenakis and his stochastic approach to music instead. The chapter "Free Stochastic Music" from his book Formalized Music is a pretty good overview of his perspective, and you can read that here.

MMC 6707
(formerly MMC 6931)

This course explores the intersection of expressive and communicative media with technology, as well as the new aesthetics and practices that are emerging around user interaction. Through collaboration and experimental production, candidates will examine interactive media and culture from the perspective of hybrid processes and structures, often expanding our notions of performance, installation, intervention, and presentation.
